How Jewelry is Inspected

Inspecting Materials

The first stage of inspection is to evaluate the materials that are supplied to the project. Each stone is inspected to make sure that the cuts and qualities are uniform. It is also critical to see that the stones are the proper size necessary to balance with the other materials and design. Exact weights must be recorded to insure that total weights and qualities are accurately disclosed to the customer.

Inspecting Jewelry in Productions

Inspection is done after every stage of jewelry making: wax carving, casting, pre-finish, torch assembly, pre-polish, and setting. After each stage, the work and materials must meet rigid standards for the process that they have undergone. It is critical that interim inspection is done by someone other than the craftspeople involved in the process. Proper inspection should always be done by a fresh pair of eyes.

Finished Jewelry Inspection

In the final inspection, the inspector will do a critical check of the materials to make sure they meet the specifications of the project. In addition, they will check karat stampings, stone security, polish, finish, function, durability, and style to insure that the final product meets rigid standards.
